Wilkins breaks away from the pack 25 Mar 200818 Sep 2017 Okay, so it’s the Wilkins Ice Shelf, but it’s even more important than news about me. The 6000 square mile (15,540 km2) ice shelf named for Sir Hubert Wilkins, the famous Australian Antarctic explorer (and very possibly some kind of relation), is breaking off due to global warming. This is the single largest such break up observed so far. Ecology and Biodiversity General Science Politics
Ecology and Biodiversity Watch out for the crocs, you drunks! 10 Nov 2007 When people visit Australia, we locals like to play up the dangers, like the most poisonous snakes and spiders, poisonous jellyfish, sharks, the drop bears, and of course the crocs. Very few of these are actually dangerous, in that with a bit of sensible precaution and awareness, you can avoid… Read More
Ecology and Biodiversity Genetic engineering and organic farming 14 Aug 2008 The heir apparent to some minor European royal family has again demonstrated his lack of knowledge and trust in scientific matters. The Prince, who has previously said that he talks to plants and consults gurus, apparently failed to talk to any actual, you know, scientists who might clear up a… Read More
Biology Downward Causation 9 Aug 201122 Jun 2018 The final claim for there being an ontological sense to emergence is “downward causation“, a phrase coined by the evolutionary epistemologist Donald Campbell in the 1970s. The idea here is that emergence is real because higher-level (or bigger, composite) entities cause changes in the properties and dynamics of their parts…. Read More
But no reason to worry about global warming, right? It’s just God doing a little redecorating? Posted by: dorid Can’t recollect any scripture (Christian, Muslim, Hindu or other) claiming that God would prevent people being stupid/foolish/short sighted and so damaging themselves, others or the environment; they all seem to say that we have free will for good or ill. On a more serious note, the bigger worry is that losing the ice shelf will allow the landbased ice to flow more rapidly to the ocean. As well as removing a large area of high albedo so less sunlight will be reflected back. Losing an ice shelf shouldn’t raise sea level but the cooling effect on the parts of the ocean it floats in and the introduction of fresh water could cause local problems for marine life, if only for a short while.
