Politics Religion and politics across the pond 26 Jun 20084 Oct 2017 On the one hand we have James Dobson declaring that Barack Obama isn’t really Christian, because he distorts the Bible. Funny, I thought the Bible had some things to say about that [Matt 5:22, 7:1, Luke 6:37, Rom 2:1, 14:4, James 4:11, but then I’m not a Christian so I… Read More
Australian stuff On preventive censorship versus punishment 2 Sep 2009 In the last few years, there has been an increasing tendency of so-called democratic governments to increase the amount of control they have over their population, under the guise of various “emergencies”: terrorism, child pornography and of course a slightly more honest concern over property rights. Just today, the Australian… Read More
Censorship It’s not censorship it’s, ahh… 4 Apr 20094 Oct 2017 Oklahoma lawmakers are singling out the visit by Richard Dawkins to talk about evolution on campus at OU, but they’re not censoring it, right? Just making academics fear for their funding, and perhaps jobs, but seeking all documentation about the visit. Just this visit, mind. Piers Hale, a historian of… Read More
I’d be voting Sex Party (and how long would it take to be able to say that out loud with a straight face?). What is its (their) history?
The sex party are a fairly new party, formed, as i understand it, in response to the net filtering policy. They are mainly concerned with issues of freedom of speech, sexuality (sex ed ect), gay marrige, and censorship. From memory they are supported by adult industry lobby groups, but then most other parties have their own lobby groups supporting them.
They are also on the money for each policy they have released. I will use their preferences to vote in the Senate.
I don’t think that the Liberals are opposed to internet censorship per se. If you listen to their statements on the filter they say they don’t support it because it won’t work, not because it violates freedoms of speech rights. Their opposition seems to be based on current technological limitations, so when those limitations are resolved i would not be surprised if they started supporting it.
There are differences of opinion among the Liberals. Turnbull opposes it for traditional liberal reasons, while Joe Hockey seems to oppose it because it is technically undoable. But they do support censorship of things they dislike.
