Australians can’t be young earth creationists 26 Aug 200918 Sep 2017 Or so says Fred Clark at Slacktivist: You can’t be a young-earth creationist and be from Australia. I think if you’re a young-earth creationist, you’re not even allowed to believe in Australia. That continent is evolution’s playground, it’s showroom. Ken Ham couldn’t have built his Creation Museum in Australia because they already have a thriving Evolution Museum there — it takes up the entire island. The displays are fantastic. Well I’d like to believe that, but Ham is from Queensland, and as recently as two years ago I received an email from a parent of a student at a public school on one of the islands off Brisbane, who wanted to know what to do because her child was being taught creationism in a state (i.e., public) school. But what I don’t get is, that if you are a biblical literalist, you must believe in a flat earth (Job 38:12-13, Daniel 4:10-11, Isaiah 40:18-23, Matthew 4:1-12, and so on) . There can no more be an Australia than there can be an antipodes of any kind. Creationism and Intelligent Design Evolution
Ethics and Moral Philosophy Arnhart on Hitler’s Ethic 9 Sep 2009 Larry Arnhart has a pretty solid review of Richard Weikert’s latest anti-Darwin guilt-by-association text linking Darwin to Hitler. However, I think he gives too much away. Read More
Epistemology Plantinga’s EAAN revisited 3 Mar 20123 Mar 2012 Blogs are places where one tosses out a hastily constructed piece of argument, or commentary, and not where one slowly and thoughtfully writes something that one will eventually earn an income from (unless you are PZ Myers). So when I responded to Plantinga’s Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism, I did so… Read More
Evolution The philosophy of classification 29 Nov 2007 The term “radical” is a very loose term. It basically means “something that differs wildly from the consensus” in ordinary usage. So I hope David Williams and Malte Ebach won’t take offense if I say that they have a radical interpretation of the nature of classification. In a couple of… Read More
But what I don’t get is, that if you are a biblical literalist, you must believe in a flat earth (Job 38:12-13, Daniel 4:10-11, Isaiah 40:18-23, Matthew 4:1-12, and so on) . There can no more be an Australia than there can be an antipodes of any kind. I have long suspected it, you are just a figment of my imagination!
Job 38:12 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place; 13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? * In this case for the Hebrew word Kanaph (ends) means uttermost part of and the word ‘erets (earth) meaning country or land. for example the land Cainan. So Litteralists. read this as he who commands the day will shake the wicked from the edges of the land. Daniel 4:10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great. * 11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth: In this case the Hebrew word ‘ara (earth) meaning low or interior when regarded to earth could be the depths of Hell. Hell being regarded as the end. God will rule the Earth after the tribulation. All sinners who have not been forgiven will be in Hell. Keep in mind this is a vision as well. Isaiah 40:18 ¶To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him? 19 The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains. 20 He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved. * 21 Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22 It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in: * 23 That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity. Here as found in verse 22 it stated that the Earth is a circle. Then goes to say he stretched out the heavens and spread them out like a tent. The Hebrew word natah (stretched) means to bend away. Since God is above the earth and completely around it in many as he lives in Heaven which is above the earth. If he Bent away the heavens that would create a circle. Mathew 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. 12 ¶Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee; I don’t see where this has to do with the earth being flat. Please clarify.
I’d just note, as far as the literalist flat earth, that everyone knows that there is no point in discussing Biblical literalism. Just about anything at all can be (and has) been justified on a “literal” reading of the Bible, and just about anything can be accommodated. There are plenty of people who point to Isaiah 40:22 which speaks of the “circle of the earth” as a proof-text for the earth being a sphere. What possibility is there for a discussion with someone who can say that?
Slacktivist is great. Anyone who hasn’t read his page-by-page analysis of the Left Behind series is really missing out: http://exharpazo.blogspot.com/2007/01/index-to-slactivists-left-behind.html
Actually the curriculum is pretty good for biology. I suggested the parent contact the regional director of education and if that didn’t get anywhere, the minister. I never heard any more.
You have to wonder about a country that unleashed Ken Ham and Rupert Murdoch on the world. Can you even quantify the damage those guys have done? But on the other hand, they did give us AC/DC.
If you truly believe in Noah, then you are faced with the puzzle of why (and how) the marsupials and monotremes made a forced march as a group all the way to Australia.
Kangaroo’s and such are naturally submissive. They would rather run than fight. When the waters of the flood receded, The polar Ice caps were much larger. If you reduce the waters in the Oceans by 60 just feet. You would have everything but the mountains above water. Now this woule create the ability to walk anywhere in the world, all the modern day continents would be accessibly by foot. Since the Kangaroo’s and such ran the fled to were there was no predators and the predators slowly took over there territory they were then trapped by the rising waters from the polar ice caps melting as they are still doing today.
For creationists, it really is about what evidence you are willing to ignore. A parent arguing in front of our school board denied the Bible supported a flat Earth, but knew evolution was wrong.
The same could be said for the Evolutionist Religion. There are no vestigial organs or bones, Still being taught but proven wrong. There is evidence of a world wide flood, such a rocks that were folded not bent. We don’t have Gill slits as a fetus, still being taught but proven wrong. Pangaea had to have Africa shrank 40% and parts removed to make it work, Still being taught. Who is ignoring evidence?
Ken Ham had to go to America to find enough crazies to make some money off. The creation museum in Australia would have been a laughing stock for a few months then would have to close due to lack of customers. Only in America is the creationist population big enough to support a scam like the creation museum.
I would like to offer anyone to ask me any question about creation or errors in the bible. If you are referring to an error please include verses and versions of the bible you are using. My email address is JDonaway@gmail.com
As to now deal with the errors in this text. “You can’t be a young-earth creationist and be from Australia.” Why not? Please explain further. The explination you gave here is you can’t believe it b/c no one else does.
Jonathan, you need to learn to identify irony and sarcasm (the original post here is laden with both), and also dead comment threads (from which most of the interest has usually been wrung), of which this is one.
