Book On rules 1 Jun 2009 My friend and colleague William Grey gave me a copy of F. M. Cornford’s Microcosmographia Academica, in which I read this passage which is so apposite to the modern day: The principle of Discipline (including Religion) is that ‘there must be some rules‘. If you inquire the reason, you will… Read More
Humor God causes a Sumerian recession 17 Dec 2009 The Onion, as always, nails it… Members of the earth’s earliest known civilization, the Sumerians, looked on in shock and confusion some 6,000 years ago as God, the Lord Almighty, created Heaven and Earth. The original is known as Clarke’s Third Law Corollary and goes, “Any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.” Who said it? Me. Keep in mind that Girl Genius is set in a steampunk fantasy world with tons of weird science. A heterodyne is basically a wizard who uses technology to actuate his magic. When inspired a heterodyne can perform feats of technology that are down right magical. GG is basically making fun of technological wonder stories from the mid to late 19th century on up to, in a sense, today.

Alan you mean a spark. Sparks are the technology wizards in Girl Genius. Heterodynes are a particularly dynasty which the main character Agatha is descended from (this isn’t a massive spoiler one finds this out early in volume I).
