Welcome to ET 3! 23 May 2009 Welcome, dear reader, to the third incarnation of Evolving Thoughts! I leave Seed with a heavy heart, but I hasten to add I did not move because of anything Seed did, and I was very honoured to be with them, and wish them the best for the future. WordPress is a bit easier to manage than Moveable Type platforms, so I can do a few things here I couldn’t before, one of which is add guest contributors. I will try to ensure that all posts from both the prior blogs are migrated over (which means a couple of posts that declare no more posts at this blog, so ignore them) and all comments I can retrieve. Unfortunately, the comments from ET1 were done on Haloscan, and I lost nearly all of them. This process may take a while, but both the original blogs are still up and will remain so for the duration; again, I thank Seed for this. The same rules of commenting apply – I may have moved but this is still my living room, so don’t piss on the floor. I reserve the right to block and delete any comments that are uncivil, spam or offensive to all. I have a broad tolerance, but don’t test it, please. See the note in the sidebar. It’s going to take me a while to get this looking like home. A new coat of paint, remove some wallpaper, get some wiring done, but I think I’ll be happy here. I hope we have fun in these new digs. That is what it’s about. Fun, and learning. Amongst our reasons for blogging, are fun, learning and the almost fanatical inability to spell PZ McHammer‘s last name… I’ll come in again. Administrative
Administrative The hiatus 20 Jun 2012 I have been filling a badly needed gap in the blogosphere lately, for which I apologise. My work situation has been extreme (we had two weeks to organise an international workshop, prepare a textbook draft and do various other things associated with navigating the US military bureaucracy. By the way,… Read More
Administrative Georgia Lee 19 Apr 2009 I don’t know if I’ll be able to post while I’m en route, so here’s a song to listen to while I’m gone, by the great Tom Waits. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtUCaUBwqCM&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0] Read More
Administrative Knees, ligaments and evolving thoughts 5 Oct 2012 I’m really sorry I’ve been quiet so long. It’s not for lack of thoughts. First I went to Sydney to work on my Nature of Classification book and then attend a workshop on the future of history and philosophy (and social studies) of science in Australia. And then I came… Read More
We playing by Aussie Rules, or Standard? I assume Aussie, in which case, Mudchute. If not…er…Holloway Road.
By the way … I find it quite unfortunate your new blog does not have preview, which is especially important for figuring out how a particular blog renders whatever subset of html it allows in comments. Also important for thinking over one’s comment before calling someone a twitter-pated asshat.
I haven’t yet figured out how to do that, if one can at WordPress. If I can, I will… Later: It seems you can’t on the WordPress.com site
Sorry to see you leave Sciblogs. Anyway, best wishes for the new transfiguration /reincarnation/ transmogrification. (Bookmarked)
Oh dear, the exodus continues. This does seem an excessive response if you want to stop us playing Mornington Crescent. It won’t work either. Mile End Road
Yes, every blogging environment has its pros and cons, and one of the cons in WordPress is definitely the lack of comment previewing. My advice is to copy and paste your comment into your favourite word processor as a substitute for a preview (though of course that won’t help with mismatched html).
First John Lynch and now you! It smells like there is a philosopher purge going on! But, dammit, if you’re not going to say darkly ambiguous things about the Seed Overlords, how are we going to get a good conspiracy theory going?
(Looks around) Hmmm, not bad. It’ll be interesting to see what you do with the place. Just make sure the riff-raff use coasters so you don’t get cup rings all over the tables. As for Peasy M’Eyeears, I’d say that the hypothesis that ‘PZ Myers’ is the last common ancestor of all existing variants is also ridiculously over-hyped. We just have no way of knowing
Congratulations on the moved-move, sb will be diminished. And by the almost-alzheimer’s water jump addendum…Elephant and Castle.
The neighborhood became a little hostile to old fashioned fogies like me, and that’s all we need to say. Well, it’s their loss, that’s all I can say. Anyway, thanks for setting up the new shop, and I look forward to more of your always excellent posts.
It’ll be hard to get used to there not being a silverback on the front page. That’s gonna cause a bit of confusion.
Live Comment Preview is available for self hosted WP blogs. Don’t know about WP.com ones, but look into it. Live Comment gives you a preview of your comment with the HTML formatted and all that.
Congratulations on coming to your senses! Maybe we should start a “back channel” forum for all the ex-Sb’ers. Anyways, I’ll happy follow you here. Back to the garage blogs days! Its loads of fun!
Unless I pay money, which, being a postdoc, I don’t have, to WordPress, I can’t edit my install. So I can’t install Live Comment Preview (or add Technorati buttons, and so on). We shall see if we can parlay this into a dribble of income so it’s self-supporting, but that’s down the track a bit. Kevin: Interesting suggestion. A kind of Recovery Program?
The neighborhood became a little hostile to old fashioned fogies like me, and that’s all we need to say. You are far more congenial than I. *bow*
I am a little late to the party, but I am glad you have kept blogging, John. It has been a little disconcerting that some of my favorite bloggers have left (First Afarensis then John Lynch then you), but I am glad you are still keeping at it. I will be sure to change my links and whatnot when all this Ida business has blown over and given me some time to breathe. Sb is definitely worse off now that you’re not around. Now I am going to have to start writing about the history of science more often to fill the void…
Snowflake, I haven’t used my WP.com blog since ever, but I think there are plugins you can add without having to edit anything. Besides which, my site only costs me $5.00 US a month (about $23,000 Aus I believe, assuming the exchange rate has leveled off a bit).
Yes, every blogging environment has its pros and cons, and one of the cons in WordPress is definitely the lack of comment previewing. But there are blogs which use the wordpress software – eg, RealClimate – which do have preview, and have had it for years. So why don’t blogs hosted at wordpress.com have the feature? It doesn’t make any sense. My advice is to copy and paste your comment into your favourite word processor as a substitute for a preview (though of course that won’t help with mismatched html). I do that anyway. And Emacs will help me with mismatched html. Trouble is, Emacs doesn’t know what html subset the blog accepts, or how it is displayed.
Congratulations on your new digs. Of course, it’s a pity that there’s no preview feature in the comments, but it doesn’t really matter as far as I’m concerned. That’s because my posts are always letter-pefect!
Kristjan Wager – afarensis is now on WordPress too. John – when are you going to get onto Twitter? If even Orac can write messages in <141 characters, I'm sure you can.
Thony C., We’re not in spoon. You can’t do that. Shepherd’s Bush. I read too many blogs already, but I’ll come when PM Sayers links.
W00t, you’re one of us now… interesting that you don’t like Sb any more. I was pondering the other day how I don’t read any evolution blogs because they’re all over-run by the flat earth brigade. You will keep up the good work with the delete key, i trust.
Thony C., We’re not in spoon. You can’t do that. Silly boy! Here at Snowy’s place we always play Australian Rules so my finishing move was legitimate. You however are in infringment! As we are, of course, playing under international blog comment column restrictions any new round start, and your move can only be considered as such, must take place in a new comment column!
