The “who” thread 8 Jul 2010 I am, as they say in The Home Country, gobsmacked. I expected that I would have a few geeks (I’m a Geek! Say it Loud!) who read me because I was sort of interesting. Instead I find Phuds, scientists, philosophers and just plain interesting people. If one is judged by one’s readers, right now I feel on top of the heap. Thanks. Do continue to introduce yourselves, and no, you do not need a graduate degree to be an interesting person (after all, I think that I am at least interesting, in a pathological sort of way*, and I didn’t have a graduate degree for most of my life). Meanwhile, I am as humble as my ego permits. Which is not a lot, admittedly… *Expect to see case studies in the literature of patient JW. Probably something to do with serial killing of administrators. Administrative Education Humor Administrative
Australian stuff On rednecking 2 Apr 2010 A comedian known for his scatological and iconoclastic humour calls Australians “basically English rednecks”, offending three ethnic and regional groups in one go. I watched this and laughed. It was very funny. But a prime minister, who is so uptight only dogs can hear when he farts, takes umbrage, and… Read More
Administrative 106 books of pretension meme 26 Apr 2008 Like Lynch, here is “the top 106 books most often marked as “unread” by LibraryThing’s users.” So what I’ve read is in italics, what I never finished is struck through: Read More
Administrative My office 12 Feb 200918 Sep 2017 The University of Sydney is covered with modern buildings, but it also has a few that date back to the 1850s. As it happens I’m located in one. It has no heating, cooling, or internal toilets, but look at it: My office is the two windows to the right, on… Read More
you do not need a graduate degree to be an interesting person true, but I’d like one. Anybody have a spare one lying around?
Funnily enough I’ve received a few emails from a guy who says that he does and is willing to part with them for small change. I believe he said he was from Oxford Plains University College of Arts and Crafts or some such.
Thony, you’re thinking of the Oxford Plains University College of Arts, Crafts and Self-administered Major Surgery.
Am I the only one who remembers the episode of Stargate SG-1 where the guy who said, “But I’m so interesting” was then killed by Baal?
I’m kind of surprised that you didn’t know this already, given you were pretty much the most respected and the most liked person on t.o. for all the time I was there. Your blog just needs a few more puns …
….you were pretty much the most respected and the most liked person on t.o. for all the time I was there. Well, heavy competition for that title from “Saint” Andrew MacRae, but yeah.
Speaking as a non-academic who never reached the dizzy heights of tertiary education, I find that there are a few bloggers like yourself, John Pieret, Thony C, P Z Mhaires, Larry Moran, ERV, Jim Lippard, Ian Musgrave and a few others who know far more than I do about your various areas of specialization and who, although the styles differ, write about them in an interesting and informative manner. I remember slothing around one Saturday morning and turning on the TV to pass the time. There was an old black-and-white movie on I’d never seen or heard of before but within a few minutes I was totally gripped by it – and it was the quality of the writing that did it. It fairly crackled. Later, I found out it was Sullivan’s Travels written and directed by Preston Sturges. Blogging gives more people a chance to demonstrate their literary talent. As for letters after the name, FCD should be enough for anyone.
I’ve been away all week, in a place where they insist you install the latest virus checker before you can connect to the network, so I missed this. But I’m Not Important, anyway: I merely provide an ear for GrrlsScientist’s parrots to chew on.
Yeah, I’m all with you on the serial killing of administrators. That includes bureaucrats, right? I think they reproduce parthenogenically here in France…
