Some fun 11 Jun 2008 This guy is brilliant, both as a guitarist and a lyricist. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpNoQaB2LT0&hl=en] Oh, his name’s Chris Smither, if you want to Google him. Evolution Humor
Evolution Random things 4 Jul 2007 Back from the drinking sessionconference, with many good thoughts. One in particular is due to the talk by Aiden Lyons at ANU on probability and evolution – after more than two decades trying to figure it out, I had to wait for a grad student to put it all neatly… Read More
Biology Repost: The Song of the Scientist 30 Oct 200918 Sep 2017 I found this on my old blog and liked it so much, I thought I’d replay it: A recent report on the songs of the eponymous “great tit”, a common forest bird famous for learning to peck the foil tops of milk bottles in the 1950s, shows that they independently… Read More
Biology Darwin Day: Enough already 18 Feb 2011 I love studying about Darwin and his life and times. I have read enormous amounts, and taught Darwinian history. I’m teaching it again this semester. I recommend the 2000 compilation album, Live As I’ll Ever Be…preceding the song “No Love Today”, Smither explains about the fruit and veg sellers in New Orleans, and what a mirliton is. I couldn’t listen to the album for about a year after Hurricane Katrina, without getting all weepy.
LOVE him! Big Fan. I think Train Home is probably my favorite song. I have a new found admiration for you john ;p

That’s not country, that’s fine guitar playing. Anyway, I discovered Johnny Cash recently… you may have heard of him.
I was a fan of his when he played Passim (a venue for folk music in Cambridge, MA) occasionally. Good to see him again.
John is correct-Chris Smither is not a country musician. Folk and blues (mainly blues), but not country. Music genre identification FAIL!
Bonnie Raitt and Jorma Kaukonen are both fans of his guitar picking which just about elevates him to godhood!
